POSITIVELY WRECKING HAVOC

Wrecked Cru' title pageEvery scene in every city/town/dorp in SA is represented best by the grassroots sweat and passion of independent crews.  If we waited to be lead or entertained by mainstream industry supported artists and groups alone, we would be dipping in a shallow puddle.  Thanks to certain groups, we are privileged to be bathing in a deep ocean.  Not only are these lads making waves, they’re surfing them to, all the way to legend and glory.  LIFE CHECK YDI.com is proud to present WRECKED CRU’:

- What’s the meaning behind the name Wrecked?

We’re WRECKED in a way that we’re all different pieces of a puzzle, but when put together we form the complete picture.

- What projects have you fellas been involved with and what projects are you currently working on?

We’ve done a couple, DIAMONDS & SPADES; RAW MATERIAL; THE BENCHMARK; CHAIN OF COMMAND; HEADLINES; THE BRAINSTORM; IT’S ABOUT TIME just to name a few. We’re currently working on a few projects, KICKS AND SIXTEENS and a few surprises.

- Where would we find you cats outside of Life Check every month?

Working hard building our business, and that is anywhere between a microphone and a dirty air-conditioned office somewhere (lol) and that is if we’re not chilling at De La Sol on Florida RD.

- What does Life Check mean for you cats?

For us Life Check means growth and opportunity, to learn from others and ultimately give back one day. It’s a platform for artists and entrepreneurs within the movement to display their talent and interact with fellow artists. It’s like Life Check is an incubator, grooming and nurturing Durban’s finest talent. It means a lot for us to be a part of a positive movement.

-You have been actively involved for some time now, behind the scenes, more than cats realize. Why is this?

Yes, that’s true. People need to realize that when one does something you do it because you want to, not because you want them to see you do it (does that make sense?). We’ve always been there with our hands extended reaching out to whoever needs our help we guess. When we do what we do the objective is to complete given task and that is it.

- What is Durban style or Durban sound? What makes this place unique in the Global Hip Hop scene?

Seven syllables and three numbers: ‘031 aint nothing to fuck with’. Please pardon our French. Poison city mc’s work hard to push and keep that cipher sound alive that is why SAs most lethal battle mc’s are from the 031. The sound is poison; there isn’t another way to explain it.

- What influences Wrecked Cru’?

Musically, spiritually, artistically and illegally (lol), WRECKED CRU’ is inspired by life and all its experiences. We guess that for as long as we have air in our lungs and blood in our veins, we live to fight another day.

- When people talk about staying relevant and keeping it real, what do you feel they are talking about?

Keep it real might have meant something else in ‘79 back in the Bronx, its 2009 SA and we think the phrase/rule means being true to yourself and what you do. T.I.A wat kind.

- What have been some of your defining moments in your careers so far?

Ownership, having full control of our business and not having to depend on major record labels to produce our music. The truth is we’ve had a few moments like those, like sharing the stage with the likes of Creamy E, Big Idea, Black Moss, Tuks, Molemi and Jabba.

- Aside from HipHop music and marketing, what else interests you cats and keeps you motivated and moving forward?

We horse whisper from time to time and that’s if we’re not fencing. Girls, work, girls (Impo’s excluded), design, art, reading, scrabble, chess, girls, Avatar, Boondocks, Poena is koning, the beach, Frere RD………anything as long as we’re not wasting time.

- What other types of music and performance do you enjoy?

All, everything, gotlhe, alles, we’re talking about music, right? We enjoy all types of music performances, minus the creatively challenged ones of course.

- What upsets you about Hip Hop today?

First of all we don’t have a problem with hip hop, but some elements within the movement, like people who see and point out all the negative things but aren’t themselves contributing in a positive way. The other is when people condemn creativity in the name of ‘that’s not hip hop’, and lack of support of course.

- What keeps you smiling in Hip Hop today?

For the love of the game, the truth is SA hip hop has grown since1999 and is even elevating to a higher level, that is if we all play our respective parts. We love it because it gives us the platform to express ourselves, to speak about our experiences and life in general, in any way we want to nogal. (Shh don’t let the others know but we heard that the ladies love mc’s and groupies adore them too)

- Thanks for your time on this. Any shout outs or last words?
